Review Notes

The Whipping Cats are Vincent Lum (guitar, vocals), Chanel Bristow (drums) and Straton Heron (harmonica, accordion, mandolin, Jew’s Harp). The three met while studying Design at Auckland’s Unitec – Vincent painting, Chanel design and Straton photography. The artwork for the album sees all three of them contribute from their chosen disciplines.
“Me and Strat were just messing round writing songs about long n dangerous man” says Vincent when recalling how they formed the band some three years ago “and we thought that we needed a drummer so Chanel was there and he said yes But he couldn’t drum”
These days though, the band not only know how to play, they have been taking on NZ’s live scene for three years and have toured NZ with Blink’s A Low Hum, The Sneaks, and played Camp A Low Hum this year.
They’ve supported diverse international acts The Sahara Hotnights, John Schooley, The Kills, The Mountain Goats, The Bellrays and The Fiery Furnaces.
When the Whipping Cats play it’s a party – with their own brand of blue-punk rock and roll that is so infectious it’s impossible not to throw all your cares to the wind and dance like a crazy person.
With this album (recorded and mastered by James Dansey of The Sneaks), Whipping Cats have managed what often eludes many a fine live act – capturing that special something, that energy and spark that comes from live performances (often best at someone’s house party) without compromising the quality of production (smokecds.com)
