Review Notes

Pairing NZ\'s premier live Drum N\' Bass act with a symphony orchestra is an ambitious project to say the least. In true Shapeshifter boundary pushing style, the band performed concerts in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch accompanied by each cities leading orchestra. Shapeshifter Live captures the final night of the Orchestra mini-tour at the Christchurch Town Hall – the band\'s home town. Vocalist Paora \"P-digsss\" Apara works the crowd into a fervour with his soulful voice and warm banter (\"Christchurch. You\'re awesome! Look at yous!\"). The (apparently huge, by the sound) audience greet the opening notes of each song with rapturous whoops and hollers of recognition showing how loved this hard-working outfit is in their hometown. Captured excellently by respected Producer Andre Upston and expertly mixed by longtime associate and live soundman Tikki Tane (Salmonella Dub). The orchestral parts sit surprisingly well with the D\'n\'B sound. Rather than just slapping some violins and cellos over Shapeshifter\'s music the strings were arranged Victoria Kelly and conducted Marc Taddei – two well-respected New Zealand classical music veterans. Songs like \'When I Return\' and \'Bring Change\' are given new life with the addition of the Orchestra the extended jamming the band does live. It\'s not often a live album not only succeeds in capturing the same feeling as being at the gig, but Shapeshifter Live definitely does. (smokecds.com)
