Review Notes

This year NZ celebrates the unique achievement of being nuclear-free for 20 years, and in an increasingly dangerous global nuclear environment this milestone seems more and more important.
To that end, The Peace Foundation's Disarmament and Security Centre, Kog Studios and Integrity Promotions have joined forces to promote awareness and education around the nuclear issue, especially amongst "the youth" of Aotearoa who aren't necessarily familiar with the events that led to the groundbreaking 1987 legislation - and what better way to get the message across than through music? This release features tracks from current artists alongside contributions from the "no-nukes era", all with an environmental and peaceful bent; from Herbs' now-iconic 'French Letter 95' and Shona Laing's 'Neutral and Nuclear Free', to TrinityRoots' 'Home, Land and Sea' and Hollie Smith's 'Prayer' - the focus is on harmony of intent as well as more obvious musical associations. Predominately roots and dub-based (not surprising given the subject matter and Kog's involvement), this is a well-intentioned and coherent compilation.
The package includes a DVD intended as an educational tool, but it's not so dry as that would imply; it features archival photos and interview footage – all previously unreleased or rare – that are contemporary with the passing of the anti-nuke accord, as well as 14 music videos from featured artists and an audio-visual history/timeline.
