Review Notes

Loop Recordings continue to mine the rich vein of Wellington singer-songwriters, this time with the debut solo release of Adi Dick.
Dick will already be familiar to many NZ music lovers, being both a contributor to Loop's Fly My Pretties project, as well as front man for rock outfit Stylus 77 (known later as Seven Suns). He's well-loved throughout the Wellington live scene, and sure to be appreciated further afield now with this assured and polished release.
Like many of his Wellingtonian counterparts, Dick's music weaves a fine line between pop, reggae and dub. Standout opening track 'Get Out', which features the sort of plucked reggae guitar and deep-down wandering bassline that, when combined with his silky-smooth voice, results in a tune that wouldn't have gone astray on Fat Freddy Drop's Based on a True Story. Indeed, much like Dallas of Fat Freddy's, Adi Dick is blessed with the sort of effortlessly soulful voice that must have other singer-songwriters crying onto their lyric sheets.
The album is a downbeat and introspective - there's no distorted slide guitar rock numbers as per his older incarnation in Stylus 77, but having turned down the volume on the instruments, Dick's voice and thoughtful (sometimes melancholy) lyrics more room to shine.
Anyone who's already a fan of the likes of Fat Freddy's Drop, TrinityRoots or Fly My Pretties should be adding this release to their collection as soon as possible, as should anyone with a penchant for singer-songwriters who can both sing and write songs. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
