Review Notes

Opshop follow up their platinum-selling 2004 debut, You Are Here impressively. After a few personnel changes, the band is now stripped back to a four-piece and sounding all the better for it.
Welsh Producer du jour Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers as well as a slew of locals including The Feelers, Tourist and 48 May) is on board, and the sound of Second Hand Planet is truly world class; up there with U2 and Coldplay - all bands who have obviously made a big impression on this Kiwi band. Frontman Jason Kerrison shows he is an incredibly gifted songwriter and he is blessed with a fine set of pipes - an extremely strong vocalist, possibly the best NZ has to offer presently.
Second Hand Planet has got it all – from stadium rockers (opener 'Big Energy In Little Spaces' and first single 'Maybe') to introspective ballads ('One Day'), while 'Helpless' is a song that Bono and co. would be proud to call there own. It's already doing the business too; 'Maybe' beat out the likes of Regina Spektor, Avril Lavigne, The Fray, Silverchair, Fall Out Boy and Snow Patrol to take out the number one single on iTunes – the first NZ band to do so – and the album has just followed suit. To think, Kerrison narrowly missed out being a finalist for the vocalist spot in "supergroup" Rockstar Supernova - hopefully he's laughing now. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
