Review Notes

Often touted as the indie-rock Beach Boys - with James Mercer's Brian Wilson-infected falsetto and multi-layered, saccharine-soaked arrangements - The Shins' third album sees them retaining their twee pop sensibilities but kicking the production up a good notch or three to do the songs justice. As excellent as their past efforts have been, with Wincing The Night Away you really get a sense that The Shins studio ambitions have finally been realised.
The Portland, Oregon group have been the darlings of indie crowd (Pitchforkmedia et al) since the release of their debut Oh, Inverted World, but in 2004 they were bought into the mainstream consciousness when their songs 'Caring Is Creepy' and (especially) 'New Slang' were a central part of the film Garden State. Since then the song has gone on to appear in TV series such as Scrubs, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Sopranos.
From the get go it is clear that Wincing The Night Away this is a more "rocking" set, but missing none of the charm that made their debut, and it's follow up Chutes Too Narrow so instantly likable. Punchy numbers like 'Australia' and 'Phantom Limb' announce the arrival of a new Shins – trimmed of excess fat yet sonically larger, more confident and catchier than ever.
A perfect summer release that will have you smiling more with every listen. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
