Review Notes

Singer-songwriter M.Ward's fifth release finds him backed for the first time by a full band, which includes Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists) and Jordan Hudson (The Thermals). With guest performances by a cast of indie-rock all-stars including Neko Case and My Morning Jacket's Jim James, this album is crowded with personality, but none more pervasive than Ward himself - who shines his particular style of Western Americana all over Post-War.
Recently described as "making records that sound like he just wandered in off the street with a few friends and hit the record button" - a compliment to his old-fashioned, laconic stylings rather than a critique of his presentation - this album sees Ward presenting not only a fuller-sounding complement of songs but also more polished production values than earlier offerings.
Introducing some very welcome rock rhythms to his blend of folk and finger-picked Delta blues, as well as a surprisingly surf-styled guitar instrumental, and a well-aimed cover of a Daniel Johnston number ('To Go Home', featuring Neko Case), M.Ward's Post-War is a charming collection that could be the crooner's best yet.
