Don\'t fret Radiohead fans: the group hasn\'t split up, Thom Yorke is just getting some of his solo stuff off his chest while the band prepare for their next album. Though, as he points out himself, the album isn\'t truly a solo release - Producer Nigel Godrich, who has worked with Yorke\'s band for more than a decade, played a major role, contributing arrangements, \"extra instruments,\" and plenty of influence. And, oddly, Yorke raided a bank of Radiohead\'s unused recordings for sounds to manipulate onto this album.
Critics are already calling The Eraser \"Kid B\" as it’s being heralded as a companion to that groundbreaking and polarizing album, but it owes as much to less commercial influences such as the Beta Band and Autechre as to Radiohead themselves.
There\'s a tight song-oriented structure to the 9 tracks here, tied together by Yorke\'s distinctive voice fronting pure synthy melodies, droning guitar and hissy percussion. Beautiful lino-print artwork on the foldout cover makes The Eraser a visual treat as much as it is an aural one. Recommended (smokecds.com)
