A major player in the Vancouver/British Columbia indie scene in the late '90s, Neko Case has led a romantically nomadic musical life - from art-school punk drummer, to everyone's favourite member of the New Pornographers (sorry AC Newman), to one of the most celebrated independent country artists of the last decade.
Her previous studio album was 2002's critically acclaimed Blacklisted, and now Fox Confessor Brings The Flood – essentially her 4th solo release if you don't count a superb live album in 2004 – contains more of the same: a modern take on classic country storytelling.
Featuring a roll call of alt-country backing players, not least of which are The Band's Garth Hudson and Giant Sand /Calexico alumni Howe Gelb, Joey Burns and John Convertino Fox Confessor sees Case prove herself as the natural successor to Patsy Kline, Emmylou Harris et al, her wry phrasing and soaring vocals highlighting increasingly canny songwriting instincts.
Drawing inspiration from a variety of unusual sources (Russian folk tales on the title track, an overhauled spiritual on "John Saw That Number," and the true story of a family's descent into madness for "Dirty Knife"), Case's narrative-rich songs are instant classics. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
