Album number four from this Louisville, Kentucky outfit, and anthemic is a word that keeps coming to mind when listening to "Z". Whether it's in the same way as the Flaming Lips ("It Beats For You"), The Who ("What A Wonderful Man"), The Verve ("Gideon") or E Street era Springsteen ("Lay Low") - just about every song here is uplifting and memorable. It could be the move to a major label or the change of line up (with the addition of a keyboardist) but at times it's almost like listening to a different band, were it not for main man Jim James' distinctive yelp which falls somewhere between Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Kermit the frog.
My Morning Jacket seem to have found their groove. There's less of the all out Skynard tinged southern rock of their last record It Still Moves, and even less of the Neil Young homage that was of 2001's At Dawn.
The music press has been hailing James as a rising star for sometime now. With "Z", he has firmly established himself as one of the great songwriters of today. (smokecds.com)
