This Wellington foursome has been a local live favourite for the last couple of years, and now they've finally captured some of their jazz-smart indie tunes on plastic for you to take home and enjoy.
The Inkling are quite an enigma in their hometown – straddling both, but not fitting into either the postured Rock or laidback Roots that dominates the capital's music scene. The Inkling takes a leaf out of a similar book to the likes of Tortoise, The Tied & Tickled Trio and Red Snapper - playing predominantly instrumental music that combines elements of both Rock (mainly of the Kraut, Prog and Indie persuasions) and Jazz and spice it up with a dash of dubby electronic experimentation.
Plenty of Wellington stalwarts pop in to lend their considerable talents on "Deluge" - Production whiz "Dr" Lee Prebble (Black Seeds and TrinityRoots fame) is behind the desk working his magic (not to mention a cameo playing Lap Steel) as well as musical appearances byThe Phoenix Foundation's Will Rickets and Luke Buda (Buda was also production adviser on the album), Fat Freddy’s Toby Laing and former Muttonbird, now Banjoist extraordinaire David Long amongst others.
"Foreign Exchange" (which has just this week topped Radio Active's influential Top 11) is the only song to feature lyrics, and provides a nice change of pace from the rest of the album, but for my money it's tracks like the upbeat and oddly timed "The Booyeouw Shamble" and "Braille" that sum these guys up best; Krautrock cyclic interplay from the rhythm section, a slightly menacing spy-theme guitar riff with some Prog-ish keyboard flourishes interspersed throughout. Great stuff!
"Deluge" is a most pleasurable listen, and works well as either background (did someone say café?) music or more involved headphone listening - and call me superficial but the spiffy glossy cover and nice price, make this an even sweeter little package! Another fine release from the good folk at Capitalrecordings and one of the better local releases we've heard in a while. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
