Review Notes

The latest all-singing, all dancing package from the clever people at LOOP Media in Wellington. 15 tracks from New Zealand and New Zealand-related artists, 9 short films, 8 music videos and assorted 'motion graphics' (aka eye candy). In short you have a little box o' fun guaranteed to keep the family, friends, flatmates and hangers on entertained for a goodly while. Leaving aside the more than ample DVD content – which I will however assure you is more than enough to leave you alternately scratching, holding, and nodding various body parts – musically this is a solid set of tracks that, while quite disparate at first listen, begins to coalesce into a thoroughly enjoyable experience with subsequent investigations.
It generally all holds to a leftfield, broken beat, soulful feel for the first half, Verse 2, Boozoo Bajou featuring Fat Fred’s Joe Dukie, and Eru Dangerspiel (former Trinity Roots’ drummer Riki Gooch) all standing out, while the middle gets a bit more techy with OMR and Tubbs/Atlantic Conveyor taking a side-step through the door marked "weird". The closing tracks from Breaks Co-Op and Jose Gonzalez opt for the other end of the corridor and the door marked "nu folk".
It's a clever progression across the album and a testament to LOOP main man Mikee Tucker's programming ability. LOOP once again move the high-water mark for compilations to new levels, and it only waits to be seen if this will indeed be their last foray into the market.
Highly recommended to the point of being indispensable. And also an essential purchase for all ex-pats out there and people looking for a good Xmas gift for the loved ones overseas.
