Rich in musical history, Jamaica has produced many great singers, songwriters and musicians. Among those however there are few who possess the unwavering and all encompassing commitment to a musical and spiritual ideal as Winston Rodney aka The Burning Spear. This superb reissue from the eminently tasteful Soul Jazz imprint contains the cream of Rodney's brilliant first recordings at Clement Dodd's Studio One - the LP's 'Presenting….' and 'Rocking Time', plus long lost 45's such as "Zion Higher" and the original version of the Spear classic "Door Peeper". Rodney and Dodd parted company in 1974 - Rodney following Bob Marley to Island and released the Burning Spear classic 'Marcus Garvey' - but even thirty-five years on, these first recordings maintain the emotional and spiritual punch that is missing in much of the so called contemporary "roots" music. Deep, uplifting, soulful and exultant, this is true reggae music in its most definitive sense, and beyond. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
