Once part of the delightful Bressa Creeting Cake (also featuring Geoff Maddock and Joel Wilton who went on to be part of Goldenhorse) who released a magnificent album through Flying Nun, Edmund Cake has been very quiet for the last five years - the result being it would appear - this delightful "indie" based pop album. Released via Auckland's idiosyncratic Lil Chief Records (also home to The Brunettes, Tokey Tones, Nudie Suits, Alec Bathgate and Shaft), 'Downtown Puff' combines the fidgety agitated sound of classic British new wave acts such as XTC with the likes of current indie pop darlings Lambchop and Flaming Lips, all held together with that charming New Zealand DIY aesthetic, Cake's delightfully wonky falsetto, and some rather brilliant and quirky songwriting. The result is a highly original work, a little left-of-centre, but with a warm charm that makes repeated listening a certainty.
