Released a couple of years back, 'Lost Soul Music' was a delightful wee indie-pop masterpiece that seduced any listener who was willing to give it a shot. Sean James Donnelly's latest effort 'Southern Lights' sees this very talented music maker moving away from his more abstract beat-based excursions into the realms of a fully realised pop masterpiece. Don't fear though fans, his electronic wizardry is still being put to good use - for this album he extensively sampled a session band (featuring the likes of Don McGlashan, David Kilgour, Dan Sperber, Anika Moa, Paul McLaney (Gramsci) and Heather Mansfield (The Brunettes)) - creating expansive and subtly provocative indie-style pop songs. The result is a natural and obvious progression for one of New Zealand's most accomplished young musicians, plus a set of damn fine songs which should open his music up to whole new audience without alienating his already considerable fan base. This is a world class album that deserves all the attention it will surely get - and an absolute pleasure to recommend. One of the best New Zealand albums of 2004 (so far). (smokecds.com)
