Formed in 1981, who ever thought that the abrasive rock of Sonic Youth would still be so thrilling today ? In no way have the band ever given up on their original blueprint - making discordant rock of the highest order. 'Sonic Nurse' continues the group's new found lease of life ('Murray Street') and once again finds them collaborating with Jim ORourke, whose recording techniques are perfectly suited to the group's experimental edge. The music ranges from the wonderfully melodic pop of Unmade Bed through to the ear shattering punk of Kim Gordon and The Arthur Doyle Hand Cream. Dude Ranch Nurse is perhaps the finest song from the band since Daydream Nation, perfectly melding the strange and sublime into a melancholic masterpiece. Elsewhere both Stones and the closing Peace Attack provide much to enjoy - the latter slowly falling in on itself until just a wave of delicious noise and distortion. Very few aging rockers can really claim to have held on to such sincerity, and Sonic Youth have plenty of that. The only difference between this and their early work is the consistency and focus, not the music. Sonic Nurse is as good a rock record as any released this year and far better than most. Far from resting on their collective laurels, Sonic Youth continue to be the best alternative band on the planet. Recommended.
