Over the last 4 years Paselode have witnessed bands like The Datsuns stroll into hometown Wellington as just another garage band with a small following, and leave as a world-slaying band soon to grace magazine covers around the globe. This definitely had impact on many of their local contemporaries who changed creative tack and jumped on the garage-wagon - but not Paselode. They stayed true to their sleazy sexy sound, their punching rock songs, and their Wellington rock roots so to speak. Now with the release of debut album 'The Taming Of The Wasps', the 'lode are seeing this commitment finally pay dividends. This is the spirit of hard rock with a twist or seven. Your journey will start with a filthy rocker called 'Dirty Little Piggy' which has become radio hit material, standing head and shoulders above the usual banality. Float through the hillbilly stomp of 'Country Song' to the twisted, hyperactive, funky swamp creature of 'Beeswax'. Vocally you'll be riding through croons and wails that distantly remind you of a strange combo of a loungy Mike Patton, a punchy growling Jon Spencer, to even the slightest hints of a chicken-fried Rob Zombie. Regulars of the Wellington live rock circuit will find classics like 'Racehorse' fully rendered in Faith No More like splendour and other familiar favourites taking on a exciting new sheen. Production and mastering on this album is world class - organic and real, highlighting low-riding fume-laden riffs so full-blown you may want to check the muffler. Elsewhere funky organ undertones and jazz-lounge tinged breakdowns wind their way throughout. 'Wasps' is a super debut from Paselode, delivering a complete experience over 13 tracks without any let-up. For cheap and easy comparisons think The Doors meets Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, HLAH meets Faith No More, all in a Class-A greasy basement rock joint. Most likely with hot chicks too. Recommended.
