Review Notes

Opshop are a five-piece band from Auckland and are the second signing to the Siren label that has made Goldenhorse a household name. The album was recorded last year at Auckland's York Street Studios with Brady Blade doing the production duties (he recently produced Brooke Fraser's album), and was then mixed in LA by Danny Saber who is well known for his work with artists like U2, David Bowie and Madonna. The album has been preceded by three singles: "Nothing Can Wait" - "Secrets" (featuring Noam Chomsky which was a major coup for the band) - "Saturated", with a fourth to come - "No Ordinary Thing" featuring Brooke Fraser on piano. Okay that's the info spiel over, what's my take on Opshop I hear you all clamour ? Well, for a "commercial" rock band (by this I mean a band that gets their singles played on "commercial" radio) these guys have plenty of substance and integrity, and in vocalist Jason Kerrison a rather exceptional and dynamic frontman. The overall sound of the album recalls "quality" international acts such as Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Jeff Buckley and Travis, and with an extensive touring program in 2004 (including nationwide support for The Feelers from mid-May to mid-June), this dynamic band and this excellent debut are certainly destined for big things.
