Review Notes

This is the original soundtrack music for the New Zealand film 'For Good' as composed by Dimmer frontman Shayne Carter, one of the few true legends of New Zealand music who can still be considered "cutting edge" (along with his production partner Nick Roughan). Put out by Wellington-based Capitalrecordings in association with Map Films (Stuart and Miranda Harcourt and Neil Pardington), the album features the 14 pieces of instrumental music that make up the original score as well as "Smoke" and "Under The Light" by Dimmer; "If I Were You" by Straightjacket Fits; (both Shayne Carter-related projects for those of you living under a rock) and from the 1970's, the New Zealand "classic" "I Need Your Love" by Golden Harvest. The film itself was described by the Christchurch Press as "a fine addition to New Zealand cinema, this is a film that will linger in the forefront of your mind" while Carter himself described the production process as involving him and Roughan spending "that brilliant Auckland summer with me stuck in darkened rooms composing maudlin music to images of abducted girls crying in the woods". Indeed. The soundtrack - like the film - isn't exactly a rollicking laugh-fest, more like moody, haunting, and at times downright scary, but as an OST its dark atmospherics are brilliant, allowing the album to stand on it's own as an engaging listening piece, while showcasing the talent of one of New Zealand's finest contemporary pop composers at the top of his creative game. To that point, 'Dor Good' also serves as an interesting prelude to Dimmer's rather excellent new album 'You've Got To Hear The Music'. Highly recommended.
