Review Notes

One of the most successful Reggae groups of the seventies, Toots Hibbert and his band the Maytals managed to not only be commercially profitable, but also produce some of the most sublime songs in all of Reggae, with "Funky Kingston", "Reggae Got Soul" and "Pressure Drop" among the genres very best moments. Hugely influential, the group would find themselves covered by the likes of the Clash and the Specials, and revered by Eric Clapton and the Stones, showing the enormous repsect the band had amongst its peers. Jump forward to 2004 and well Toots and company are still going - Toots' voice is still golden and they have come up with a gem of an album surely all will enjoy. 'True Love' is at its heart a pure celebration of music, a collaborative affair with a wide range of artists from all walks of life. Opener "Still Is Still Moving" features Willie Nelson, the aging Country star the perfect antidote for Toots' sweet falsetto. "Time Tuff" features a new school country star in Ryan Adams, whose subtle guitar line compliments the beautiful rhythm. Longtime fan and friend Eric Clapton features on a wonderful version of "Pressure Drop" while another aging rocker Keith Richards guests on "Careless Ethiopians". Other interesting collaborations come in the form of "Monkey Man" with pop group No Doubt, a scorching version of "Funky Kingston" with Bootsy Collins and hip hop band the Roots, and the beautiful "Blame On Me" featuring Rachael Yamagata. All the guests show the obvious respect this legendary group deserves, resulting in a small masterpiece - an album dripping in love and warmth, blending culture and history with the sensibilitities of modern pop - and with an appeal both widespread and seemingly effortless. Poised in similar territory to John Lee Hooker's magical 'The Healer', 'True Love' is that rare thing, a meeting of different worlds that works - beautifully concieved and executed this is set to become one of the best albums of 2004. If you're not a reggae fan don't be put off either, this is just fantastic pop music that really should appeal to any caring music fan. Recommended (with much love and respect). (smokecds.com)
