Firstly via Straitjacket Fits, and now through his current outfit Dimmer, Shayne Carter has achieved the enviable position of being arguably one of New Zealands greatest, most natural rock stars, and his new album (the aptly titled) 'You've Got To Hear The Music' sees him quietly evolving into a first-rate soulman - all without losing his musical thirst and undoubted edge. Utilising collaborators that include Fat Freddy's Drop (first single "Getting What You Give"), SJD (the stringladen "Case"), Graeme Downes (string arrangements on "Only One That Matters"), vocalists Anika Moa and Bic Runga (on the spine tingling "Happening"), plus beat and production collaborators Nick Roughan and Andrew "Submariner" Morton throughout, Carter and his Dimmer cohorts continue to update their immense sound in exemplary fashion. The upshot of all this is an extraordinary album, that will not only be one of the best New Zealand albums of 2004, but one of the best from anywhere in 2004.
