The story goes that in mid-2001, three young men with quite diverse lives - apart from
being very talented musicians - were brought together to form part of a band. The
dysfunction within said band was slightly more than anyone should have to handle, however Matt
Newdick (bass), Adrian Dick (guitar & vocals) and Anthony Davies (drums) hit it off quite nicely. Together, they split off and formed their own group. And thus, STYLUS77 was born. Nice story.
In the intervening two-and-a-half years to the releases of this, their eponymous debut Mini-LP, STYLUS77 have worked at their art and the craft of it, generating a healthy buzz in their homebase of Wellington with a two-track demo CD recorded with Mike Gibson at his famed Inca Productions in Martin Square during the winter of 2002. From that CD, the track "Goodbye" sat at #1 on Radio Active's Top 11 for five weeks and, following signing to Wellington-based label Capitalrecordings, and nearly a year of work with Mike Gibson recording, overdubbing, mixing and then mastering in Sydney, we have this, the mighty 'STYLUS77'.
The sound is a mix of folk, dub, roots, soul, rock, blues and country, performed with consummate professionalism and held together by frontman Adi's emotive soul-based singing style, sumptuous slide playing and simple boy-meets-girl-gets-pissed-off-with-girl lyrics. This is a real deal Kiwi feel album, one for lovers of fine local music and songwriting. Heartily recommended by all at the Smokecds HQ.
