Review Notes

Second album of 2003 from Michael Franti, this time with his Spearhead mates, and again he is on the money. While 'Songs From The Front Porch' had a charming intimate feel, 'Everyone Deserves Music' shows a more musically developed side to Franti, and will bring delight to the numerous Spearhead fans out there. The usual blend of funk, soul and conscious insightful hip hop are expanded as Franti and Spearhead continue to absorb 21st century world-wise grooves - everything from global-inspired rock, dancehall, bossa nova, dancehall, afrobeat and more. In fact it's getting pretty hard to pin Franti into a musical genre (always a good thing), with this album recalling every thing from Motown soul, The Clash, U2, The Beatles, Finley Quaye (the "good" album) and Bob Marley, while guests such as Gift Of The Gab (from hip hop outfit Blackalicious) and Sly & Robbie (Black Uhuru, Grace Jones) keep the grooves tight and funky. A colourful and uplifting album, Franti continues to mature and develop as both a songwriter and band leader, bringing to us in the process an exciting eclectic blend of original global pop music.
