Three piece Auckland indie band Fang have already found a strong fan base for their melodic lo-fi pop music, but this fantastic first full length should attract a much bigger new bunch of listeners to the band. Produced by Arch Hill Recordings' in-house engineer Ed Case and Label Manager-cum-Fang band member Ben Howe, 'Somewhere Out There' is an excellent example of what can be achieved with standard digital recording techniques and a truckload of great ideas. Some wonderful arrangements and a little studio trickery brings out the best in what's essentially a bunch of straight up simple pop songs, which have been carefully crafted from the ground up with layer upon layer of sounds. Fang's core members often play several instruments apiece on each song and are joined here and there by a string section and on a number of tracks by auxiliary member Steve Reay (ex-Subliminals), fleshing out a full and perfectly formed sound. Every bit of extra effort has paid off for Fang, whose album is one of the most interesting and impressive local releases in recent memory. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
