Excellent double retrospective from this 'low key' yet endearing New Zealand singer/songwriter who forged the way for a number of women musicians in this country (Bic Runga immediately springs to mind). Shooting to overnight stardom as a 17-year old in 1972 with the hit single '1905' (a song dedicated to Henry Fonda), this Carole King influenced songstress has forged a long career with her penchant for sincere folk-based songs, frequently observations on international invents written with a unique kiwi slant (examples being 'Soviet Snow', '(Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy', 'Fear Of Falling'). Replacing an earlier compilation (the 1990 'Retrospective Collection'), this fine set also includes material from the last ten years (Laing remains a consistent if not prolific recording artist), while the two disc format allows for a more complete overview of this timeless songwriter. Recommeded for any fan of NZ music, particularly those who enjoy the more traditional songwriter approach. (smokecds.com)
