Long serving American indie band The Flaming Lips have released a string of critically acclaimed albums over the past 20 years or so but are perhaps destined to never find crossover commercial success, due largely to their uncompromising, unique and off-kilter take on lo-fi rock and roll. That's not to say that the 'Lips can't write a great pop song. On the contrary, Yoshimi is packed with them. The Flaming Lips are in a light, elated mood throughout and the sympathetic ear of long time 'Lips producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev / Mogwai etc.) knows exactly how to bring out the best of their eccentric songs and exotic arrangements. Packed full of strange delights and baffling pop heights, Yoshimi is another must-have album for Flaming Lips fans, or a great introduction for fans of likeminded lo-fi outfits like Grandaddy and Mercury Rev who have yet to check out this pioneering group.
