Review Notes

One time Led Zep front man delivers his first solo album in some time - and it's pretty bloody good. Teaming up with a band consisting of various Portishead, Cure and Sinead O'Connor sidemen, Plant has delivered an album largely of covers (only three tracks are originals), of which all are imaginatively chosen and emotionally performed. Harking largely back to Plant's '60s youth (including Tim Buckley's 'Song To The Siren', Bob Dylan's 'One More Cup Of Coffee', Arthur 'Skip' Spence / Moby Grape's 'Skip's Song', the Hendrix standard 'Hey Joe'), this distinctive singer tackles all with aplomb, with able support from his band who manage to straddle his Haight-Ashbury hippy tendencies and Eastern WOMAD-like moods with genuine ease. Of the three new originals 'Dirt In A Hole' is particularly good. He may not still possess the vocal power of his glory Led Zep days, but Plant is still an imposing and unique vocalist, and this is a fine album. Recommended. (smokecds.com)
